Blue Beaker was established in 2008. What started out as a Farmers Market endeavor quickly evolved into a full-fledged storefront in Ottawa, Illinois. Over time the shop grew, at one point moving into one of the largest storefronts in downtown Ottawa. The store sold yarn, tea, chocolate and specialty gifts, offered knitting classes and at one time even served soup! The shop eventually moved from Ottawa to Westmont, remaining in business for a total of seven years before closing in 2015. We are now re-opening on a much smaller scale offering only a selection of our most popular handcrafted soaps. For now, our soaps are only available online at bluebeaker.com, but we hope to add some local shops soon!

Blue Beaker soaps are handcrafted in small batches the same way as before with one exception.  When we created our original formula, we included Palm Oil in the recipe. While we did our best to always obtain responsibly sourced materials, we felt like it was time to make a change to ensure that we were not contributing to any problem. The harvesting of palm oil has led to the displacement of indigenous peoples, deforestation and loss of biodiversity. Because of this Blue Beaker has removed palm oil from our formula.

We have also made our production process and packaging more ecologically sound by sharply reducing the amount of plastic - right down to replacing the tape we used to use to close labels, instead using recycled paper stickers.

Our soaps are still handcrafted with a blend of decadent butters and oils including olive oil, shea butter, cocoa butter, coconut oil, and soybean oil, and are still scented with the same great smelling essential oil blends or fragrances. And, like our old formula our bars still produce a rich lather that we’re sure you’re going to love.
